The Importance of friends

Sometimes we all feel lost and helpless. The question is, who will be the one to help us find ourselves again?

In the book Looking For Alaska by John Green, the main character Pudge, moves to a new school to start over. He met someone who changed his life; Alaska. People may seem alone but it shows how one person can affect your life when you didn’t even know it.

Pudge changes as he starts going to his new school and this change makes him feel accepted. This is shown when Pudge says, “Before I got here, I thought the only way out of the labyrinth was to pretend not to exist, to build small, self-sufficient world in the back corner of the endless maze and to pretend that I was not lost, but home.”

When I first read this quote it showed me how Pudge changed when he got to his new school and met Alaska. She made him realize there is hope and friendship in the world. In the quote when it says, “Before I got here...was to pretend not to exist, to build small, self-sufficient world..” This shows how before he got to this new school with people like Alaska to comfort and support him, he was very vulnerable and powerless. He had no confidence and meeting Alaska really made him feel as though he belonged. As shown through the quote, teenagers can relate to the characters’ relationships because it shows how one person can affect your life in a positive way. Many teens feel alone but when they realize they have a friend or someone who cares about them they feel wanted and fulfilled. This shows the reader how one person can affect your life when you don’t even know it.

People can affect your life one in such a way that helps you learn messages in life. This is shown in the text when it says, “Some mysteries aren’t ,meant to be solved.” When Pudge gives up on trying to find Alaska it teaches the reader and Pudge that not everything is meant to turn out the way you want it to. This can connect to so many teenagers in the world because sometimes you feel helpless and empty, but you need to have strength during difficult times. This can relate to Pudge because he feels lost and abandoned when Alaska dies and when he says this , it shows he understands that he tried to try and move on with strength. Pudge learns that be can’t always win in situations. Even though Alaska died, she still taught Pudge a lesson in life, to have strength in very difficult times.

Your friends can be mentors who can inspire you to be someone you wish you are. In the texts it states, “If I were rain, I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane.” This quote shows how Pudge viewed Alaska. He felt she was powerful and had strength in times Pudge didn’t. He is awed by how courageous and inspiring she is to him. Not only can this occur in a book but it also occurs in an human's life. I have been inspired by many people and they have pushed me to become the caring, supportive and selfless friend I am becoming. Alaska was important in Pudge's life like my friends have been in my mine. Alaska was very important in Pudge's life and without her Pudge would be a completely different person. Teeangers can relate to this because there is always someone you can look up to. This shows how teenagers can relate to the characters because it shows how one person can affect your life when you didn’t even know it.

People can change and affect your life tremendously. Throughout the book characters have shown and taught others to have strength in difficult times, to feel accepted and lastly to be confident and have courage. Alaska has been a main aspect in Pudge's life she changed him into the person he is now. Is there anyone in your life that makes you feel like that?
