Speak

When reading the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson lying comes up a lot. Melinda struggles throughout the book with a big lie that has taken over her life. She loses her friends and feels abandoned by her friends and doesn’t feel supported by her family because she hasn't spoken up about the night she got raped. In this book it shows that lying is never the way out of a situation because it will always find away to come back to you.

Lying is never the way out of a situation because you wouldn't be able to have your friends to help support you. Lying your way out of a problem is never the way to slove it. Melinda never learns this in her senior year of High School. One bad night changes her life completely. In the book it states, “ I hate you” She mouthed. I Noticed that all of Melinda's friends are not friends with her anymore because of that one night. That one night when she called the cops during a party. Everyone thought it was because of the drinking but it was really because she was raped. This quote shows one of her best friends before the innocence  happened. This makes me wonder is her friends her her real friends. Melinda experiences many feelings of being insecure and unwanted by everyone because of her friends not being their to support her in this difficult. Melinda has no courage to tell anyone about what happened and this lie is keeping her away from her life, her friends and her confidence.

Lying is never the way out of a situation because it can make you feel insecure about yourself. All throughout the book Melinda is alone this is shown especially when she says, “I am an outcast.” This shows how she feels very isolated from everyone else. She feels this way because she has not spoken up. She keeps lying about the night she got raped. She doesn't understand that lying will always come and find a way to haunt you, until the truth is revealed. This lie keeps Melinda  alone and feeling isolated. She keeps trying to find a way to look past what happened but it's the lie that's holding her back. Overall, Melinda is lying about what really happened and it is the never a way out of a situation because it will never go away.

In conclusion, all the through the book speak teaches the reader that lying is never the way out of a problem. Lying can lead to all sorts of problems such as losing your closed friends and to feel insecure about yourself. Melinda should've spoken up about that night but thought that her lie would go away, but a lie never goes away because it always come back to haunt you. Melinda learns this the hard way in her senior year of high school. This can connect to teenagers now because it shows that lying is never the way out of a situation because it will always find a way to come back to you.
